How to get to the Jane Austen Trail Walk

  • By Train: Alton is easily accessible by train, with direct services from London Waterloo.

  • By Car: Parking is available in Alton and Chawton.

Both Alton and Chawton have excellent visitor facilities, including tea rooms, pubs, and gift shops. Be sure to stop for refreshments at Cassandra’s Cup, a delightful tea room opposite Jane Austen's House.

2. Chawton Village

Follow the tranquil country lanes to Chawton, the quintessential English village where Jane Austen lived from 1809 to 1817. Must-visit highlights include:

  • Jane Austen's House Museum: Once Jane's home, this cottage is now a museum preserving her manuscripts, letters, and belongings. Please pre-book admission tickets. Due to the small size of the rooms, they limit capacity to 12 visitors entering the House every 20 minutes. Opening hours are 10am – 5pm with last admission at 4pm.   • St. Nicholas Church: The resting place of Jane’s mother and sister, Cassandra.
